Windows 10 Review - Creators Update

Microsoft have been releasing updates to Windows 10 that add new features and change how it works since it was released, but what's Windows 10 like as an operating system today? Does it have enough features, is it user friendly, is it stable?

Features

As far as features, Windows 10 scores pretty high - it has been constantly gaining features since its release. These many features include coloured title bars, inbuilt skype messaging and calling apps, virtual touchpad, night light, new Paint 3D app and so on. Despite these features sounding great, some of them were, unfortunately, not executed very well - for example, the Skype messaging apps was very basic compared to the Skype desktop app. It seems that the main problem with many of the new features Microsoft are adding, is that they are often slow, buggy and quite basic. One thing I've noticed in the Photos app is after an update in which Microsoft redesigned the app's UI, it was quite slow and buggy, for example, after clicking or tapping to hide the UI when viewing a photo, the UI takes 2 - 5 to respond, or when returning the all photos view, the app takes too long to respond. Two of the bugs I've encountered in the Photos app are the app crashing and photos turning into just black when viewing them. The Photos app is just an example of the many buggy, unstable apps that come preinstalled with Windows 10. To conclude, unfortunately, many of the features and apps included in Windows feel full of bugs, unstable and incomplete.

User Friendliness

In terms of user friendliness, Microsoft's UIs are very inconsistent - take File Explorer and the OneDrive Store app for example, they are both file browsing apps made by the same company for the same operating system and yet they look completely different - how is the user supposed to find the back button when is next to the address bar in file explorer (which doesn't exist in OneDrive) and in the lop left of the title bar (which is hidden until you swipe down from or mouse over the top of the screen in tablet mode and full screen) in OneDrive, and how are you supposed to know that in the OneDrive app, you have to click a button to allow selection of items - and, in order to leave this mode, you need to click the same back button used for navigation. To conclude, this is just one of the many examples of user interface inconsistencies, depriving the user of a good experience.

Stability

As mentioned under features, there are problems with stability in Windows 10. Another example other than the Photos app is Windows Explorer - Windows Explorer control the desktop, Start, the taskbar and certain elements of apps. In Windows, I've noticed it to be quite unstable and to crash a lot.

Conclusion

Unfortunately, Windows 10 has not improved in terms of User Friendliness and Stability whilst it has, even if they're buggy, done well with features. If you've encountered any bugs or want to see features added, submit your feedback on Feedback Hub.

I think that Microsoft needs to focus on stability and optimisation for a while, until they fix the messy operating system that is Windows 10. What are your experiences with Microsoft's latest OS, what do you think Microsoft should be focusing on?
