WannaCrypt Virus is Infecting Speed and Red Light Cameras

The WannaCrypt virus is a very dangerous one as it scrambles your data with encryption, making it completely unreadable, no matter how good you may be at computers. The virus asks you to pay money to the creators of the virus to unscramble, or unencrypt, your files. Read more on this virus here.

Recently, this virus has made its way onto speed and red light cameras, apparently because somebody doing maintenance on them accidently inserted an infected USB. This virus has apparently infected over 50 cameras in Victoria, Australia. The cameras belong to a government contractor, RedFlex, who was apparently hired to install the infected cameras. Victoria Police have suspended 8000 tickets issued for speed and red light infringements since June 6, they have cancelled 590 tickets. As the cameras are not designed for general use that most computers are used for, they are not set up to have third party software running on them, causing the WannaCrypt ransomware to place them in a continuous reboot cycle. These cameras run a form of Windows, most likely an older version of Windows Embedded, which is designed for these sorts of devices.
