As you probably know, Windows Update is a feature in Windows that allows you to download and install updates for Windows and other products on your system. In Windows versions prior to Windows 10, it had multiple autmatic update options, which allowed Windows update to either not check for updates automatically at all, check for updates without downloading them, check for and download updates or check for, download and install updates. Windows update has changed in Windows 10. For starters, it no longer has a place in Control Panel - it only has a page in the new Settings app. The new Windows Update page in the Settings app is very different to the old Windows Update Control Panel page.

The new one will show the progress of any updates currently downloading or installing or the option to Download or install them if they haven't done so automatically yet, it'll also give you Details, Learn More and Advanced options. The Details link will show all avalible updates, the Learn More link will search Bing for "check for updates in windows 10" and the Advanced Options link will bring you to Windows Update Settings.

The first option you'll notice is "Choose how updates are installed", if you click the drop down box, you can choose "Automatic" or "Notify to schedule restart". There is no option to disable the automatic download and installation of Windows Updates.

If you're running the Pro version of Windows 10, you can enable "Defer Upgrades" which delays new feature updates for several months. More info can be found here.

You can also view your update history and configure other options here.

Can you disable updates?

Windows update does not provide an option to disable updates, however, they can be stopped from donwloading and installing automatically though other methods, such as disabling the Windows Update service.
