Sometimes, you turn on your computer only to encounter a blue screen or similar error. Read on to find out how to access Windows' built-in recovery tools! Note: the following does not apply to Windows 8 or 10, to find out how to access their recovery options, click here

If your computer is experiencing errors during startup, you can access the built-in recovery options by mashing the F8 key on your keyboard after you turn on your computer.

The following options should appear

You can experiment with these options, however, if your not sure what to do first, follow these steps.

1. First, give the Last Known Good Configuration option a go.

2. If that does not fix your problem, give Safe Mode a go. If safe mode manages to boot up, you can use this mode to diagnose your problem. If your not sure how to investigate and determine the issue, an easy option is to use System Restore, this allows you to put your computer back in time to a a previous state while leaving your documents and files untouched. To use system restore, open your start menu and type 'System Restore' and it should show up in the list of results.

3. If your computer still refuses to boot up, use the Repair Your Computer option.
